Prop James Currie is determined to build on his debut season at Sixways after signing a new deal at Warriors – and revealed his excitement at the chance to work with the new Forwards coaching team of Nigel Redman and Phil Vickery.
Currie enjoyed an eye-catching first season at Worcester as he made seven appearances in cup competitions for the first team.
The 22-year-old also grabbed the headlines with a memorable last minute try in the away European fixture with Bucharest Wolves in Romania to snatch a try bonus point for Warriors.
The Plymouth-born prop is now bidding to push his claims for more rugby this season and believes, after putting pen to paper on a new contract, he is perfect place under the watchful eye of Redman and Vickery.
He said: “I am delighted to sign new terms for this season. The club is going places so it is good to be part of it.
“I enjoyed my first season here and I settled in well. It went well for me and I am just looking to progress a bit more this year.
“I featured in some games and Hilly gave me the opportunity, particularly in the Amlin Challenge Cup, and it all went well for me. Hopefully this season I will get even more game time and I can show what I can do.
“There is plenty of competition up front. There is a good mixture of young guys to compete against and also the experienced ones like Tevita (Taumoepeau) who I can learn off.
“Phil Vickery coming in is a major plus for me. This is the right place to be as a young prop,” he added.
“Phil is from the south west like me and hopefully we will get on well and I can learn as much as I can off him. In terms of scrummaging, you can’t get better than learning off him.
“As a young rugby player he was someone I always looked up to. Being from Plymouth, I would look at him being from Devon and knowing he was from the same area I would follow his career and watch him.
“I was delighted when I heard he was joining and also Nigel Redman. I have worked with Nigel before in the England Under-18 set-up so know what kind of coach he is. He will be very good for the club and he will help my game too.”
A number of new faces have joined the Sixways ranks this summer and Currie revealed the new recruits had settled in quickly during a testing first week of pre-season.
“A few of the new boys are here now and they are settling in really well and dealing with the banter. The squad is looking really good,” added Currie.
“Pre-season, and the first week, has been a bit of a culture shock to us all. Coming back off holiday to Thailand and coming in here during a lovely British summer, when it has not stopped raining, it’s been different.
“We have been hit with the double yo-yo session, which went okay and I am in my target zone, and we finished the week off with hill sprints, which is just lovely.
“But this is where the hard work counts and I need to get my head down now, put pressure on and let the new coaching staff know that I can have another good year for Warriors.”
