Matavesi hunts 7s Series debut for Warriors

Josh Matavesi admits he would love to showcase his skills in a Warriors shirt for the first time at the J.P. Morgan Asset Management Premiership Rugby 7s next week.

Worcester boss Richard Hill is already relishing the prospect of unleashing the Fijian international centre next season having captured the 21-year-old from Racing Metro, where he played alongside Juan Martin Hernandez and Francois Steyn in the Parisians’ midfield.

But while the former Exeter centre, who was born and raised in Cornwall, hasn’t been given the green light by Hill to play in the competition just yet, Matavesi is eager to get his Warriors career started.

“I haven’t heard a lot about it from the coaches, but I would be interested in playing in the J.P. Morgan 7s,” said Matavesi, who if selected will line up against Bath, Gloucester and former club Exeter at Kingsholm on Thursday, July 26 in the third and final pool of this year’s J.P. Morgan 7s.

“Being of Fijian descent, sevens is the type of thing that’s in our blood. It suits my game as well because I like playing in space and looking to get an offload away.

“I actually played for Exeter in the J.P. Morgan Sevens two years ago and I really enjoyed it. If the opportunity came to play again then I would jump at the chance but it is up to the coaches. I just can’t wait to represent Worcester for the first time.

“From what I have seen at Worcester, I reckon we could have a decent team – there a few guys here with a lot of pace.”

After scoring one of the lowest amount of tries in the Aviva Premiership last season, the Warriors are also hoping that Matavesi will add more midfield spark.

“I like to think I can bring flair and can add to the attacking style Worcester have been looking for,” he said. “I have got a physical presence and an offloading game to go with it.

“When I was invited by Richard to have a look at the facilities and it is clear they have got one of the best set-ups in the country.

“The way everything is run is so organised – the attention to detail with a full-time nutritionist here is staggering.

“Everything is in place for the club to be successful, and I would not have come to a club that did not want to achieve things.

“I know what Worcester’s reputation was in the past for playing forward-style rugby, but it will be a different story this year – I promise.”
