Fly half Andy Goode acknowledged Worcester Warriors would need to learn the lessons from defeat at the hands of Bath Rugby if they are to make an impact on this season’s Aviva Premiership.
Warriors went down 24-23 after a last-gasp penalty from Bath’s Olly Barkley and, according to Goode, the side must work on their weaknesses to make progress.
He said: “To be 15-6 up at half-time and lose at the death like that is heart-breaking, but there are new laws out there which both sides fell foul of.
“We will definitely look at the breakdown because we gave a lot of penalties away. The tackler has got to role away quicker, which we knew the referee would pick up, but that didn’t happen so we will have to address that.
“We’ll look at the video and we’ll improve. We’ve got to up our intensity and increase our concentration levels at times because, even at the last kick-off, we dropped the ball and then gave away a penalty. We’ve got to learn and we’ve got to learn fast because it’s a tough league.”
Despite a disappointing second-half performance, Goode said the side would take a lot of positives from the first-half showing and believes the right signs are there for a good season.
“We attacked a lot more than they did and we looked more dangerous with ball in hand, which is encouraging,” he added.
“We put in a big effort and there were things which were good, but we know we can improve before our next match.”
Warriors now travel to Goode’s former club Leicester Tigers next Saturday afternoon and the fly half is optimistic the side will put in a good performance.
He stated: “We’ll see how Leicester get on tomorrow against London Welsh. They’re a great side and I’ve got a lot of fond memories there, it’s always a tough place to go.
“I was obviously sent off there last season so, if selected, I will want to put in a big performance. It’s early in the season and we’ve got nothing to lose so we’ll give it a real go.
“It will always mean a lot to me playing away at Leicester, but I’ll just be looking at it as another game. It’s about Worcester beating Leicester and hopefully I’ll be part of that Worcester team.”
