An iconic Olympics’ statue was unveiled by Worcester Warriors’ Acorns’ Ambassador Shaun Perry.
The two-metre statue of the mascot ‘Sherlock’, part of the Olympic legacy, is one of 84 nationally created for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and bought by a Malvern businessman, who has housed it for 12 months at Acorns Children’s Hospice.
Shaun had a hand from Malvern Sherlock fan Isabel Bradford, aged two, who brought along her own Wenlock doll to celebrate the unveiling. Her dad Richard said: “She is Wenlock mad: she loved watching the Olympics and Paralympics; we are really delighted that he has such a lovely home at Acorns.”
Shaun said: “I think it looks pretty cool: his outfit is awesome. His location in Acorns’ gardens is inspiring, for the children, and it is a massive focal point for the gardens. The children will be able to have mini adventures looking for clues on Sherlock.
“It is really exciting, and is just what the hospice needs, now that the Olympics is over.”
Acorns’ Head Nurse Sue Curry said: “It’s great that our children have a piece of the Olympics here at Acorns for the Three Counties. They were so encouraged by the achievements of the Paralympic athletes, and Sherlock will remind them every day of what they can do.
“It is vital to have local people fundraising as we need to raise most of the costs of care, which amount to £750 a day per child, and this will help us draw attention to the need for support.”
The businessman, bought the statue to support good causes, and arranged to have it transported from its site in Regents Park – near to Baker Street, so named after Sherlock Holmes – to Acorns, where it will remain for a year, to be viewed by visitors and to help with fundraising and special occasions.
