Short: LV= Cup bid remains wide open

Warriors wing Andy Short believes qualification for the semi-final of the LV= Cup is still up for grabs despite yesterday’s narrow loss at London Wasps.

Warriors went ahead after the half hour mark before eventually going down 28-19 in a closely-fought encounter but Richard Hill’s men still lead Pool 2 of the competition thanks to their superior tries scored record.

Warriors, Cardiff Blues and Sale Sharks all have five points while Leicester Tigers are currently bottom of the group with four points.

And, according to Short, any of the four clubs could still progress to the knock-out stages.

He said: “In the LV= Cup the groups are always open. Teams field different sides in every match so it’s not over for any of the clubs in our pool.

“The matches are just as heated in LV= Cup games as they are in the Aviva Premiership because players want to stake a claim for a first-team spot and try and get a bit of silverware.

“We went to Wasps looking to attack and we’ll do exactly the same against London Irish in our next LV= Cup game. We want to score tries and that’s what we’ll aim to do.”

Short was one of Warriors’ brightest performers at Adams Park, where he scored his side’s second try before making two try-saving tackles.

“I was happy to get the try and make the two tackles but obviously I’m still disappointed with the result,” continued Short.

“We’re trying to play attacking rugby and score tries and it’s just that final bit of accuracy which is letting us down. But we’ll be working on that this week.”

Warriors return to Aviva Premiership action on Friday night as they host Saracens and the wing thinks that yesterday’s loss will drive the team on.

He added: “We’ll work on recovery this week and they’ll be a few sore bodies after the Wasps game but we’re used to that.

“It’s a massive week and we’ll use the loss as fire for the Saracens game. Friday night games are always tough and there is always a brilliant atmosphere so hopefully we can get another win.”
