Hill excited by big Perpignan Euro challenge

Head Coach Richard Hill admits he is excited by the challenge facing his Warriors as they tackle Perpignan in the Amlin Challenge Cup – and has predicted a game packed full of attacking rugby.

Warriors top Pool 2 after two rounds of European action but are closely followed by the French side who have also romped to two big wins in the competition.

Perpignan are expected to arrive at Sixways will a team packed full of international talent – including Wales ace James Hook and former England man Luke Narraway – and Hill is wary of the threat they will possess.

However, with memories of the Euro classic with Stade Francais on home soil fresh in his mind, he will encourage his team to go on the attack as they hunt a place in the last eight and knockout stages.

“It is a really exciting game for us and a big test,” he said. “Our forwards will have their work out as Perpignan have a big pack and I also we don’t expect them to kick much. They will run the ball from their own line and only kick when it is a last resort.

“It will be an exciting game because we don’t want to kick to them and allow them to counter. We want to keep the ball in hand and they will too. We could have two teams slugging it out up front and everyone behind will be running it around, so it will be a superb game.

“It’s important we put a marker down here and ideally we would want a bonus point. We are both closely matched so it looks like it could come down to points or bonus points. We will be aiming to stop them picking anything up off us.”

Hill is also determined his Warriors will continue the upturn of fortunes that has seen them impress in recent weeks against high flying Saracens and Harlequins.

He added: “We started off like a train at the beginning of the season and played some really good rugby. We were excited about the attack and we were playing really well.

“It’s not often you can keep going on that upward curve and we hit a plateau when we had a spell with Wasps away, Sale at home to a certain extent, and Exeter away where we dipped.

“But to produce two good performances, against the top two teams in the league, we feel we are back on track. We have looked very carefully at ways to get our performances back on track and I feel we have come out of this spell a better team.”
