Head Coach Richard Hill insisted his Warriors must persevere with an attacking playing style as Worcester lost out 27-18 to Northampton Saints at Sixways Stadium.
Two late tries via powerful driving mauls from the East Midlanders earned them the points in a closely fought Aviva Premiership fixture, with Andy Goode scoring all Worcester’s points with the boot.
Worcester now face a trip to local rivals Gloucester Rugby on Friday night as they seek a return to winning ways.
However, Hill was left upbeat by the manner in which his team played as they made countless line breaks but failed to finish off Saints.
He said: “A year ago we wouldn’t have seen Worcester play with that sort of intent or ability.
“We played 15-man rugby and I thought some of our individual performances were outstanding. Errie Claassens, Josh Drauniniu, the half backs with Jonny Arr and Andy Goode, and the forwards were all handling and offloading.
“We made more line breaks in that game than we have made in any Aviva Premiership game. But we are not finishing them off.
“We have got to keep persevering with that type of rugby, it’s the style of rugby the players want and enjoy playing.
“We can’t afford to go back to basics, we have got to keep playing with that intent and ball in hand and learn to finish off those line breaks we are making.
“I don’t think we are far off it. The hardest thing is to make the line breaks, but today we got beaten by a power game.
“We knew what was coming with the scrum and lineout maul, we couldn’t deal with it and they do that very well. But we had the intent to play that is very encouraging.”
Hill conceded that Worcester had ultimately lost due to the power of Northampton and the turning point had come when Neil Best was sin binned on 66 minutes.
“The game turned when Neil was sin binned and he swears blind he didn’t come in at the side. We conceded the two tries when he was off the field,” added Hill.
“It was a bad scrummaging day, we are disappointed with that and we failed to stop their lineout drive. Clearly we have got to go back to the drawing board and work it out.
“I am convinced that Nigel Redman will sit down with the forwards and work out a strategy so the next time that happens we will be more successful.”
