Warriors miss out in Sevens Plate Final

A young Warriors side reached the Plate Final of the Bury St Edmunds Green King IPA Sevens on Sunday where they missed out on victory after going down 50-5 to specialist Sevens side The Apache.

Warriors faced Samurai in their first game of the tournament, one of the leading invitational Sevens teams in Europe.

Samurai, who included former Warriors player Matt Cox in their side, were given a scare after Worcester youngster Josh Watkins ran the length of the pitch to touch down. But Samurai found their rhythm and eventually won the game 38-5.

Warriors did secure their first win of the day shortly afterwards, however, as they battled to a 27-21 victory against the Nigerian national team.

Mark Hewitt’s side then narrowly went down 23-18 to the Welsh Charitables before seeing off a spirited Bristol University side 40-10 in the plate semi-final to reach the showpiece event.

Academy Manager Hewitt said: “This young side showed great character throughout the tournament and improved with every game. The final proved to be one game too many but I was very impressed with the players and they will go again in the Oxford Sevens this weekend.

The Academy will play in the Oxford Sevens this Saturday before competing in the Manchester Sevens the following weekend.
