Thomas motivated to start Warrior journey

New signing Jonathan Thomas has spoken of his determination to start something truly special at Sixways – and believes his past experiences at the Ospreys can help play a part in a bright future at Warriors.

Former Wales international Thomas will move from Ospreys and the familiar surroundings of the Liberty Stadium this summer for a first crack at the Aviva Premiership with Warriors.

Thomas is one the ‘Originals’ at Ospreys having been at the region since its inception in 2003 and acknowledges settling into a new club will be a completely new scenario for him.

However, the versatile back row, who can also operate in the second row, revealed the ambition at Warriors and the chance to be part of a new journey a major factor behind his move to England.

“It feels like a very good time to be joining the club. There is a lot of interest with Dean Ryan coming in and the next few years will be interesting as we start this journey,” he said.

“I remember when I started at the Ospreys back in 2003 and it was a learning curve for all of us. I remember when we went on a ten-game losing streak, we were a young squad and there were tough times.

“It is that experience that brings you all together, you learn from mistakes and become better for that. You need a goal in sight over a few years, a two or three-year plan so you know where you want to go.

“It is similar with Dean and what he is planning for the club over the next few years.

“There has got to be a reality about where you are and the situation you are in; it can take time to realise all of your ambitions. But there is so much potential at the club and if I can help in any way it will be an experience I will relish.

“When I came up and spoke to Dean there were two major things that hit me,” he added.

“Firstly, the club and facilities are exceptional. I played at Warriors back in 2007 but so much has changed since then. I was blown away and inspired by the surroundings here.

“But, crucially, I was impressed by Dean and his thoughts. From our first chat, I was impressed by him and what he had to say.

“The potential at Warriors is huge so I’m excited about working with Dean and the coaching team. It’s an exciting time to be at Worcester and, on a personal level, I’m at a point in my career when I need this challenge.”
