Warriors visit champions in opening game

Worcester Warriors will travel to Aviva Premiership Rugby champions Leicester Tigers on the opening weekend of the new league season.

Warriors will make the trip to Welford Road to face the Tigers, who claimed an historic tenth Aviva Premiership Rugby title in May, beating Northampton Saints 37-17, on Sunday, September 8, kicking off at 2pm, live on BT Sport.

Dean Ryan’s men open their Sixways campaign a week later as they host London Irish – one of five sides Warriors defeated on home soil during last season’s Aviva Premiership campaign.

Harlequins and Premiership new-boys Newcastle Falcons also visit Sixways in September as Warriors play three home matches in the first month of the season.

Supporters have a big festive local derby to look forward to as Warriors travel to Kingsholm to tackle Gloucester on the weekend of Saturday, December 21 for a huge Christmas clash.

And the return fixture could also prove to be significant as Nigel Davies’ side visit Sixways on the final day of the season on Saturday, May 10.

Saracens, who finished top-of-the-table last season, will look to get revenge for last season’s Sixways defeat when they return to Worcester in holiday spirit on the weekend of Saturday, December 28 before the two sides clash at Allianz Park on the penultimate day of the league campaign on the weekend of Saturday, May 3.

Warriors will make their longest away trip of the season on the weekend of Sunday, March 30 when they visit last season’s RFU Championship winners Newcastle Falcons.

With mouth-watering home clashes against Leicester Tigers and Sale Sharks to look forward to during the RBS Six Nations Championships, it is all set up to be another year of huge excitement for the Sixways faithful.

Director of Rugby Dean Ryan said: “We are delighted with our fixture list and look forward to the new season.

“We recognise the challenges we are going to face in the Aviva Premiership this season. It is going to be a tough year for us, but we are going to fight really hard and what better place to start than at Welford Road.

“There is no bigger test than going away to Leicester Tigers on the opening weekend, they are the champions and could have six British & Irish Lions involved. But we are excited by that fixture and the season ahead.”

Phil Winstanley, Rugby Director at Premiership Rugby, added: “Every year the anticipation over the new fixtures grows and looking at the 2013-14 season it is clear we have huge matches every weekend,” said Phil Winstanley the Rugby Director at Premiership Rugby.

“Matches in Aviva Premiership Rugby get more compelling and competitive every year and last season we once again had a smaller average winning margin (a slim 11 points) in our games than in any other League in the world.

“We’ve had three different Aviva Premiership champions in the last three years and last May we had a new club (Northampton Saints) in the Aviva Premiership Rugby Final.”

Heather Smith, UKDI & Ireland Marketing Director at Aviva said: “We are delighted to be sponsoring our fourth season of Aviva Premiership Rugby.

“To see three different winners in the last three years has been fantastic and shows just how competitive the Aviva Premiership has become.  We are happy to be extending our partnership with the sport through to 2017.  Good luck to all the teams involved in the coming season.”
