Vesty impressed by Sixways set-up

New Academy Transition Manager Sam Vesty may have only arrived at Sixways on Monday morning, but already the former Leicester Tigers player says he is impressed by the club’s set-up.

Vesty finished his playing career with Bath Rugby at the end of last season and has taken his first step into coaching with his new role at Warriors.

And with the new season fast-approaching, Vesty admits he is eager to pass on his knowledge to the next generation of rugby stars.

He said: “I’m really excited. I think we’re a club going in the right direction and since I’ve come in I’ve been really impressed with how Dean has got things running.

“I’ve always wanted to be a coach. I’ve always wanted the chance to work with young players and hopefully give them good ideas.

“I’ve learnt a lot from great coaches and players over the years so I will be aiming to pass that on to the academy boys and help some become quality first-team players.”

Vesty is one of five new coaches appointed by Director of Rugby Dean Ryan and will split his time between working with the academy and first-team.

And the 31-year-old admits that progressing to the first-team is a big challenge for the youngsters.

He continued: “I am looking after the top end of the academy, trying to get those guys ready for first-team rugby and I will also be helping Shane Howarth out with the first-team backs.

“The step-up for academy players is tough in terms of the size and strength of first-team players, the speed of the game and the fact that the experienced guys are just a bit better at reading things.

“But hopefully I can get some of these guys to that level where they’re playing in the first-team. And to the standard where they’re not only making their debuts, but they’re contributing consistently.”
