Academy Manager Mark Hewitt believes Warriors can be proud of their performances in the JP Morgan Sevens this summer despite suffering defeats at the hands of Leicester Tigers and Harlequins in the final.
Warriors stormed to victories over Exeter Chiefs, Gloucester Rugby and Bath Rugby in the group stages of the event last Thursday.
But their winning-streak was ended at the Rec by Leicester, who eventually progressed to the tournament finale before succumbing to Gloucester.
After three wins from five JP Morgan Sevens matches, Hewitt paid tribute to his players. He said: “We’ve got some good young kids in the system and these sorts of tournaments will do them the world of good.
“I’m pleased with our performances in the group stages. I think we caught everyone cold and no one expected us to play so well.
“But as with the IRB Sevens Series, teams can win one tournament and struggle in the next one and that’s the nature of this game.”
Gloucester finished runners-up to Warriors in the group-stages at Kingsholm before seeing off Newcastle Falcons, Saracens and Leicester to lift the trophy at the Rec.
But, according to Hewitt, the level of rugby didn’t have any impact on Warriors’ results at the Rec.
He added: “I don’t think it was necessarily a step-up from the group stages. I think we just froze in the first game. The boys were a bit nervous and we made errors.
“We’re all bitterly disappointed after last week when we were really successful. Sevens is a cruel game.
“We played some good stuff but we made too many errors and the games ran away from us. That was the story of our night really.”
