Ryan praises players ahead of season opener

Dean Ryan has paid tribute to his players ahead of Warriors’ first game of the new Aviva Premiership campaign.

Warriors kick-off their season on Sunday with a clash against last season’s champions Leicester Tigers.

And, according to Ryan, he has been impressed by the progress his players have made during pre-season.

He said: “Everybody is genuinely excited about what we have done over the past two or three months and what this new group look like.

“I can’t fault the group in how much they care and how passionate they are about Worcester moving forward.”

Ryan arrived at Sixways in May and will take charge of his first competitive match on Sunday.

Warriors have looked strong in pre-season, backing-up victory over Rotherham Titans with impressive performances against Cardiff Blues and Ospreys.

And the Director of Rugby admits his side’s only focus now is on the beginning of the Aviva Premiership season.

He added: “It’s been a long pre-season and, with all the changes, we have probably needed it. But we’re at the stage now where we just want to start playing.

“We are not the biggest squad and we are not the strongest squad but there are a lot of blokes who work really hard and really care about trying to improve the place. That is great. It’s a great place to start and we will see which point of the ladder we are on come Sunday.

“This place is well-coached and people need to get up to speed with what that requires. That is a culture change for some people and we will see how they adapt going over the next 12 months – those that adapt quickly get a chance to stay with it.”
