Shervington – Players are fired up for Leicester clash

Ed Shervington insists his side are fired up for Sunday’s season opener against Leicester Tigers at Welford Road.

Shervington will feature at hooker for Dean Ryan’s first competitive match as Director of Rugby and believes there is no better way to start the season.

He said: “If you asked me what team we had to play first up I would have picked Leicester – I can be certain the boys are going to be fired up.

“It’s the first game of the season, everyone is going to want to get out and put in a good performance and we’re all looking forward to it.”

The Warriors players have endured a tough pre-season campaign under Ryan as he looks to build a competitive team. And Shervington believes the hard work will pay-off during the new campaign.

He continued: “We’ve done a lot of work. There’s been a lot of detail being fed to us and the boys are in a really good place.

“We’ve learnt a lot and we know each other really well now. We’re in good form and we’re ready to go into the game and do ourselves justice.”

Warriors didn’t record an away win during the last campaign despite producing impressing performances at Kingsholm, Twickenham Stoop and Welford Road.

But, according to Shervington, the players have a different mentality ahead of this campaign thanks to arrival of Ryan.

He added: “Dean has come in and he’s changed everyone’s mind-set. He said we should be exactly the same away from home as we are at Sixways.

“We play rugby the same whether we’re at home or away – that’s what we’ve been asked and that’s what we’ll respond to.”
