Grove hungry for first-team return

Alex Grove admits he is hungry to regain his first-team place after returning to action in Cavaliers’ 50-15 victory over Sale Jets on Monday night.

The club centurion hasn’t featured since the final day of last season but came through unscathed after his 40-minute appearance.

He said: “I can’t wait to get back in the mix. It’s been a long lay-off and I’m very hungry for first-team action.

“There’s a lot of boys back now so there’s plenty of competition and everyone is battling to get in the team.

“Ravai has done very well this season. Max Stelling has been biting at his heels and Clarkey and Josh are always in the frame.”

Grove marked his return by storming over the whitewash as Cavaliers racked-up an impressive eight tries to secure their first win of the Aviva A League campaign.

And, according to the centre, it was an enjoyable evening for the players.

He continued: “It was good to have a few boys back and it was great to get the win. There were a lot of boys with smiles on their faces – and that’s important.

“Everyone gave a good account of themselves. I wanted to get my confidence back and get some game time under my belt, so it was a good night all round.”

Grove will be hoping to feature when Warriors host Newcastle Falcons at Sixways this Saturday.

If he isn’t ready to return to the physicality of the Aviva Premiership this weekend, though, he will more than likely be called upon when Cavaliers host Leicester Tigers next Monday.

He added: “Dean Ryan has said it’s a great place to be for young players who are willing to stick their bodies on the line and credit to the guys that did that against Sale.

“Whether it’s the older players coming back from injury or the younger guys who are developing, everyone wants to give a good account of themselves and spur the Cavaliers on to victory.”
