Ryan ready for battle of the Deans

Dean Ryan admits he is ready to go head-to-head with opposite number Dean Richards when Warriors host Newcastle Falcons on Saturday.

Both Directors of Rugby have returned to the Aviva Premiership after four years out and will meet for the first time this season in Saturday’s clash.

And, according to the Worcester boss, his side will need to be at their best to secure their first win of the season.

He said: “Newcastle Falcons is a big game for us. Dean is an outstanding Director of Rugby. After 15 months of starting that project, he would be expecting his side to be resilient – and they are.

“They put a lot of pressure on teams. I’m not surprised in the least that they’ve been competing well in their opening matches.

“We need to get something going at home. Everybody is aware that this is early days for this group of players at Worcester but we will have to raise our game and battle hard.”

Ryan’s side dominated parts of last weekend’s clash at London Wasps but were dealt a huge blow when Ignacio Mieres was forced off just before the break.

The fly-half has been given the all-clear for the Newcastle Falcons encounter and Ryan is confident his squad will start to take shape when fellow Argentinians Mariano Galarza and Agustin Creevy arrive at Sixways next week.

He continued: “Mieres will be fit and so will Paul Warwick. James Percival is on the horizon and Alex Grove came through the Cavaliers victory on Monday night.

“With our three new Argentinians available in the coming weeks, we’ll have more options and they will strengthen our situation.”

“We’re in a better position than we have been in terms of squad numbers and it would be great for them to come in off the back of a win at home.”
