Hammond excited ahead of European debut

Dean Hammond admits he is excited at the prospect of making his Amlin Challenge Cup debut against Oyonnax on Saturday night.

The wing has been handed his first Warriors start after impressing for the Cavaliers in recent weeks.

And he admits he can’t wait to take to the field. He said: “I’m really looking forward to it and I just want to get out there now and put in a good performance.

“Oyonnax have been very strong at home in the Top 14 this season so it’s a different challenge for the boys over in France.

“No one really knew much about them going into the season but looking at their results we know we have to take them seriously. The boys will be up for it.”

Hammond enjoyed spells with Western Province and Stellenbosch Rugby Football Club before joining Warriors.

He has also represented the South Africa Sevens side and helped the Under 20 national team win the Junior World Championship in 2012.

And after arriving at Sixways in September, the 20-year-old admits the last month has been a whirlwind for him.

He added: “It’s all happened very quickly so I’m trying to embrace it and learn as much as I can as quickly as I can.

“The boys have been very welcoming and have helped me to settle in so I’m looking forward to being involved.

“Dean Ryan has been fantastic. I’ve had a lot of one-on-one coaching so it’s been a quick transition. All the coaches have helped me to get on as quickly as possible and kick on in the team.

“I’d like to play in Europe and in the Aviva Premiership and get as much game time as I can. Hopefully I can help the team get some wins.”
