Hogg – We can gain confidence from Amlin

Worcester Warriors take on Sale Sharks this weekend in the Amlin Challenge Cup at Sixways.

And after a hard-earned draw in Oyonnax last weekend, Head Coach Carl Hogg insists the European competition is vital in helping Warriors gain confidence.

He said: “It’s important for us to keep building blocks and gain confidence throughout this competition. There were a lot of elements in the game last weekend which we can be really proud of.

“We were extremely pleased with the way we operated and we will see if we can take that a step forward this weekend.

“The Amlin does give you an opportunity to mix things up a little bit. There are quite a few guys who have played a lot of Premiership rugby so it’s good to just rest one or two and give some others a chance.”

Several young talents played their part in the testing conditions in France and the Head Coach believes their inclusion will benefit both themselves and the club.

He added: “Ben Howard and Dean Hammond stuck their hands up in the difficult conditions and did exceptionally well in a tough environment.

“That can only stand them in good stead going forward, not just in the Amlin, but also in the Premiership and for the rest of the season.”

Warriors’ Argentinian signings arrived at Sixways last week after featuring for their country during the Rugby Championship.

And Hogg says they are a positive addition to the Warriors squad.

He concluded: “They’ve been great since their arrival. They’ve been very professional, slotted in really well and you can see they pick up knowledge and detail very quickly.

“These guys have operated at Rugby Championship level and that is a top-quality competition. If they can bring that form to us then it’s going to be a huge positive.”
