De Carpentier looking to seize first-team opportunity

Flanker Richard de Carpentier insists he wants to make the most of his opportunity in the Warriors first-team.

The 23-year-old has been an ever-present over the past month and says he is enjoying his inclusion in the first-team playing alongside experienced back-rowers Leonardo Senatore and Jonathan Thomas.

He said: “I was lucky enough to get my chance in the team with a couple of injuries and I'm trying to make the most of my opportunity.

“I’ll keep my head down and take on all the advice I can get from the coaches and the boys.

“Hopefully now I can keep my place, put in some good performances and help move us up the table.”

At the halfway point in the Aviva Premiership season, Warriors are still searching for their first victory but the flanker insists his side have every chance of picking up a win on Saturday at London Irish (3pm kick-off).

He admitted: “Going into the clash with Irish, it is a big crunch match that we are confident we can win.

“They are struggling a bit at the moment but they have class all around the park so we won’t underestimate them.

“We will treat it as any other game because every game for us is massive now and we are all working hard to try and get ourselves out of the situation that we’re in.”

A win would close the gap between the two sides, who last met in September when Warriors were pipped 20-18 at Sixways.

De Carpentier continued: “We’ve been dealing with the pressure quite a bit at the bottom and it’s not a nice place to be.

“But if we can get a win, Irish and other teams will be looking over their shoulders and we will see how they can react to that pressure on and off the field.”

Last weekend Warriors dominated second-half proceedings against table-toppers Saracens and De Carpentier believes the performance will spur them on for this Saturday’s battle.

He concluded: “We worked well in the second-half and that was a testament to the boys. We dug in and we were unfortunate not to get a couple of scores.

“Knowing that we tested the league’s best side which is packed with internationals, it gives us a lot of confidence going forward.”
