Ryan praises courage of team after Leicester performance

Dean Ryan praised his team’s courage after they pushed Leicester Tigers all the way at Sixways.

Warriors eventually lost 23-22 to the Aviva Premiership champions but showed a determination rarely seen this season.

And, according to the Director of Rugby, his team reached a level they need to display for the rest of the campaign.

He said: “It was our best illustration about how hard we’re going to fight to stay in this league.

“It was about courage and about passion. You add a bit of tactical understanding and a great performance by Chris Pennell and suddenly you’re competing with one of the top sides in the country.”

Pennell kicked 17 points as Warriors enjoyed their finest performance of the season. And the Warriors boss was quick to pay tribute to the Warriors full-back.

He continued: “People are only just getting an insight of Chris Pennell. I struggle to see a full-back in the Premiership other than one or two who are holding down international places that represent like that against Leicester.

“He’s a fantastic player and a fantastic bloke and we’re lucky to have him. Everyone involved in Worcester should be aware of that.”

Warriors travel to Northampton Saints next weekend and Ryan believes his side must replicate Friday’s performance.

He added: “We’ve got another opportunity to get some more points next weekend and see if we can close the gap.

“We’ve enjoyed representing the club in the right way and we’ll get on with facing up on Saturday.

“We’re trying to build a team who care and if we’re a strong team we’ll get performances like that.

“We’ll target every game and try and match that level of commitment and see what happens.”
