Vesty delighted with Cavaliers progress

Academy Transition Manager Sam Vesty admits he is delighted with the progress of Warriors’ youngsters.

Vesty witnessed Warriors’ second-string side, Worcester Cavaliers, beat The Army on Wednesday night in a fifth consecutive win.

And he insists the youngsters played a vital role in ensuring the side came out victorious against a strong Army outfit.

He said: “The Army came with one game-plan – which was to be big and strong and hold the scrum.

“We didn’t cope with that very well but whenever the ball was in play, we looked sharp and very dangerous.

“I was impressed with a few of the guys. Some of the youngsters came off the bench and really changed the game.”

Former Leicester Tigers star Vesty picked out a couple of the rising talents who made a big impact when coming on late in the clash.

He admitted: “In the final 20 minutes Elliott Davies came on and really blew new life into us.

“We got on the front foot and I thought he was a threat all over the place and he really ran that last 20 minutes of the match.

“Young full-back Jon Hughes deserves a special mention because he came on in testing circumstances and did a really good job. I’m chuffed he acquitted himself so well.”

And Vesty insists Cavaliers’ fine form is standing the youngsters in good stead as they look to push their claim for a place in the first-team.

He explained: “I think there are players on the periphery who are putting their hands up. Obviously that’s Dean’s call and hopefully with Cavaliers getting another win, it will convince him that some of the guys are worthy of making the step up.

“From my point of view that’s good because my role is based on helping these players make the transition into the first-team and it’s great to see them moving up the ladder.”

Andy Symons played at centre for the Cavaliers on his comeback from a lengthy injury and Vesty praised the back’s performance.

He added: “Symons looked composed on the ball, defended really well and showed good pace.

“He felt a bit rusty having not played in a while but overall we are very pleased with his return.”
