Ryan – Symons staking his claim for start

Dean Ryan insists young centre Andy Symons is pushing his claim for a place in the Warriors starting 15.

The six-foot-five back came off the bench last weekend to produce a moment of magic, finding space in the Newcastle backline before offloading to Josh Drauniniu to score a match-winning try.

And Ryan believes the youngster is putting his hand up every time he features for Warriors.

He said: “He has been robbed of a couple of opportunities because of injury but he seems to find space in every game he plays.

“He can open people up and he is making a decent claim for selection. There is definitely a case being built.”

Warriors picked up an elusive first Aviva Premiership win of the season against the Falcons and Ryan knows his side must build on that performance at Sixways next Saturday against Exeter Chiefs (12 April, kick-off 3pm).

He continued: “We’ve given ourselves a chance to stay up so let’s just see if we can respond to that against Exeter.

“It will be a tough challenge but it’s an opportunity here at home. This group has come a long way and we’ve been reasonably competitive over the last six weeks.

“There’s a lot more consistency around performance and if we can get something against Chiefs then who knows – it’s not all over.”

And the former England number-eight insists a weekend off from competitive action will stand his side in good stead for next week’s clash.

He added: “This week we’ve been able to train without the specifics of the weekend on top of us.

“You roll around pretty quickly in the Premiership season and you’re straight back into the organisation of another game so it’s been nice to train this week without that over us.

“The extra weekend gives us a little bit of a reprieve to generate the batteries, get some people back from injury and we will see what we can do next week against Exeter.”-
