Warriors Chief Executive hails Pennell’s England selection

Warriors Interim Chief Executive Anthony Glossop believes Chris Pennell’s England selection illustrates the fact that players outside the top Premiership clubs can make an impact on the international stage.

Pennell was included in Stuart Lancaster’s England squad for the first time in May after an outstanding season for Warriors and could make his international debut during Saturday’s opening test against New Zealand after being named amongst the replacements.

And Glossop admits it is refreshing to witness players selected for England duty on the back of their individual performances.

He said: “Chris was in remarkable form throughout the entire 2013/14 campaign and consistently made the headlines for his performances against more recognisable players.

“International selection should be based on a player’s potential and form and I am delighted to see Chris rewarded for his outstanding contribution in the Aviva Premiership.”

Fellow England players Matt Mullan and Matt Kvesic both made their international debuts during their time at Warriors.

And according to Glossop, Pennell’s call-up is another indication that players at Sixways will continue to be recognised if they have international credentials.

He continued: “We have had a number of international-standard players at Sixways over the years and the ones who have been good enough have been selected for their countries.

“Chris is of international standard and I would expect him to be selected for England regularly if he maintains his current form.”

Pennell’s form during the 2013/14 season saw him nominated for the Aviva Premiership Player of the Season award before his subsequent England call-up.

And Glossop has assured supporters that the full-back will remain a Warriors player next season.

He added: “We were delighted that Chris signed a new contract with Warriors in December last season to extend his stay here till at least 2017.

“He will be an important member of the side as we look to realise our aim of gaining promotion back to the Aviva Premiership at the first time of asking.”
