Ryan focused on developing youngsters in Championship

Director of Rugby Dean Ryan admitted he remains focused on bringing up the youth after his Warriors side swept aside Moseley 23-7 at Sixways to win their first game of the Greene King IPA Championship season.

Christian Scotland-Williamson made his first Warriors league start with fellow Academy players Mike Daniels and Tiff Eden also coming off the bench in the win.

And Ryan insisted it was a tough call to go with youth or experience ahead of the game.

He added: “To start Christian was a big call. We all know we wanted to get off to a good start.

“The question was do we pick the biggest and most experienced team? Or do we push those guys out who haven’t played much and say now is the time for them to start learning in a real environment?

“So I’m really pleased that we were able to do that and come out with a win.”

Ryan made six changes to the starting line-up with Charlie Mulchrone running in two tries and Ravai Fatiaki also getting his first Warriors try.

And the Warriors boss confirmed he will continue to give opportunities to his rising stars.

He stated: “We always said we’re going to make changes and we’re going to push some of this group out and get them the experience.

“We have to work out a way of getting through it intact and make sure we keep winning games and keep developing five or six players every week.

“I don’t want to be coming to the tail end of this Championship with guys who haven’t experienced it and either through choice or through injury are forced into that situation.

“We have too much youth across the squad to not give it an opportunity so we’ve made five or six changes purely for those reasons and we got two or three guys off the bench who were able to experience that today.”

Despite tasting victory for the first time this season, Ryan warned that similar tests are round the corner following Moseley’s late spell of pressure.

He added: “The whole nine months is going to be the same so let’s not hide away from it.

“It was a gutsy effort from a Moseley side who were on the back-foot and full credit to them.

“That’s what’s coming for us every single week and we have to be better, smarter and understand the tournament to be successful.”
