Under 15s sting Wasps in London

Worcester Warriors Under 15s stung Wasps 24-21 last Friday at Merchant Taylors’ School in London.

Warriors Outreach Co-ordinator Dan Lyne looked for the youngsters to exact some sloppy errors that cost them against Gloucester the previous week where they went down 20-15, but having also beaten Bristol 50-5 earlier on the same day.

The Under 15s responded in the exact manner by racing into the lead through wing Charlie Gamble, thanks to some fantastic handling from the backs to set the paceman free.

Growing in confidence, the team started making inroads into Wasps’ territory with the forwards carrying well and recycling the ball for the backs to test the hosts’ defence out wide.

Number-eight Oli Thorneywork then muscled his way over the whitewash for Warriors’ second try of the afternoon.

Wasps responded through a converted try of their own to make it 12-7, and despite feeling the heat, Warriors started making breaks but a lack of support and handling errors let the hosts off the hook.

After being camped in the Wasps 22, Warriors were quick to react with a Zach Shirley tap-and-go which was recycled through a couple of pairs of hands.

This caught the Wasps defence napping and winger Alex Bartley went in under the sticks for a converted try by Will Tanner.

Wasps then went on the offensive and scored a couple of tries but when loosehead prop Tom Furnival crashed through the defence on the 22, he raced in for a try, converted again by Tanner.

Lyne said: “We’re really proud of the boys’ effort and commitment. These games are never easy and when you add the travel in, it becomes that little bit more difficult.

“For some guys that was a six-hour round-trip so to deliver that performance when energy levels are a bit lower, it’s a big feather in the boys’ caps.

“It’s been a really good couple of weeks for the Under 15s and 16s and we’d like to say a big thank you to all the parents and players in both age-groups for their continued support.”
