Drauniniu shines with double in Barbarians win

Josh Drauniniu notched two tries for the Barbarians as they defeated the Combined Services 31-15 on Tuesday night.

The Warriors wing and Mat Gilbert both represented the Baa Baas in the match to mark Remembrance Day.

With the fixture a highlight in the services rugby calendar, they were denied victory by one of their former colleagues.

Drauniniu, who had previously played for the Combined Services when serving for the Navy, scored two second-half tries in nine minutes to effectively decide the contest.

And he admits it was a ‘weird’ evening playing against old colleagues.

He said: “It was very weird. I knew almost everyone in the Combined Services team. I actually wondered for a second whether I should be going to the other changing room!

“But it was a privilege and an honour to represent the Baa Baas, especially with it being Remembrance Day and the special occasion was marked by a great game.”

Former Welsh internationals Nigel Davies and Phil Davies coached the Barbarians and Drauniniu admits a half-time talk helped the Baa Baas prevail in the second period.

He explained: “The first-half was a bit scrappy. We kept losing the ball in the conditions and we couldn’t play the kind of rugby that the Barbarians are known for playing.

“But for the second-half we talked about keeping the ball and were able to play it out wide.”

BaaBaas took an early lead through Cardiff flanker Jon Edwards before Army engineer Peceli Nacamavuto scored an interception try.

James Dixon nudged the Services further ahead with a penalty in the second-half but Drauniniu levelled after an offload from Charlie Walker-Blair.

The Warriors man then intercepted deep in his own half to run the length of the field to put the Baa Baas back in front.

Luke Robinson's close-range try briefly raised the Services' hopes of a fifth win in 15 meetings since the fixture began in 1997, but late tries from Walker-Blair and replacement prop Alan Brown secured victory for the famous invitation side.

Drauniniu added: “I loved my experience and being able to put on the Barbarians shirt was a special moment.

“It was also great to get some game-time and to get a couple of tries under my belt.”
