Ryan hails skipper after two-try show

Director of Rugby Dean Ryan hailed captain GJ van Velze after his two-try showing as Warriors secured a bonus-point win over Plymouth Albion.

The number-eight notched two tries in the first-half during a dominant forward display and Ryan was quick to pay tribute to the South African.

He said: “GJ is getting better and better. He understands our game, he gets the mix right, he is powerful in the driving lineout and he knows how to hold a bit of width and to be patient.

“I’m really pleased with him in both his captaincy and the way he is playing and we’re really seeing the benefits of what a quality player he is.”

Warriors led 17-0 at the break but lost their way in the second-half of the clash as Plymouth looked to fight their way back into the game.

And Ryan admitted: “We’re disappointed that we lost momentum in the second-half.  In the first-half we were clinical but we strayed off theme a bit and allowed them in.

“We talked about our individual desire to do well and that it didn’t take away from what was possible here and in the second-half that happened a bit.

“Everyone tried to be positive but we lost a bit of cohesiveness.”

A resilient Warriors did thwart their opponents who piled on the pressure in the late stages.

But Ryan admits there is plenty for his side to work on.

He added: “Credit to Plymouth who piled away at us at the end. However, we’ve got to be better than that.

“We could have made it easier for ourselves. Our game management needs to be more clinical and in the second-half it wasn’t.

“Sometimes elements of the game you have to adapt to. We’ve got to be better about adapting to what’s available in a game and I want us to be clinical, collective and cohesive for longer.”
