Watkins flies to Japan for England Sevens

Warriors Academy winger Josh Watkins will fly to Japan with England Sevens this week ahead of the Tokyo leg of the HSBC World Sevens Series.

Watkins made his England Sevens debut last weekend in Hong Kong in the win over Kenya before stepping out for his country in the Plate Semi-final where England lost 12-7 to Australia.

The 21-year-old has also made four Warriors appearances this season in helping the side reach the B&I Cup final which takes place this Good Friday.

Watkins will be up against Fiji, Wales and Hong Kong in the pool stages of the Tokyo Sevens.

Fiji won their third tournament of the season in Hong Kong last weekend after narrowly defeating England 14-12 in the quarter-finals.

Head Coach Simon Amor said: “Narrowly losing out to Fiji was obviously very disappointing but overall the performance against a team of their quality and form at the moment was encouraging.

“For a number of the players Hong Kong was their first competitive tournament in a few months so I think probably our decision making wasn’t quite where it should have been. However having played over the weekend we are in a good place to build on that performance and hopefully do well here in Tokyo.”

The tournament will be held at the Prince Chichibu Memorial Ground in Tokyo, Japan and will be broadcast on Sky Sports.
