Warriors to feature in Bury St Edmunds Sevens tournament

Warriors will be battling it out with Premiership teams at next month’s Greene King IPA Sevens tournament in Bury St Edmunds (Sunday 3 May).

Joining the elite men’s tournament are last year’s winners Northampton Saints, who will be defending their title against fellow Premiership giants Saracens, as well as Sale Sharks.

Specialist Sevens teams, Samurai Sevens, Irish Exiles, Jesters, Apache, Esher, Suzuki Warriors and Welsh Academicals, have also entered the competition alongside Bury Wolfhounds – where the prize money is  £7000!

As in previous years, big crowds are predicted as interest mounts around rugby with the World Cup just months away.

As is tradition for Sevens tournaments, spectators are encouraged to come in fancy dress, with spot prizes given for the best dressed – the theme this year being Superheroes.

Women’s national teams of Wales and China will compete in the eight-strong women’s tournament which will run alongside the elite men’s and the open men’s tournaments.

Bury St Edmunds RUFC Club Chairman Michael Robinson said: “With top quality fast-paced rugby as entertainment, you simply need to add a spot of sunshine, a fancy dress party atmosphere, some children’s fun events and a pint or two of Greene King IPA, and there is no better way than to spend a bank holiday weekend!”

Alongside the tournament, the club will once again be running  a beer festival all day, offering a range of  fine local ales.

The much anticipated sporting celebrity guest who will present the winning trophy this year will be announced a week before.

The tournament has previously welcomed England players Chris Ashton, James Haskell, David Strettle, Courtney Lawes and Dylan Hartley to perform the role.

Entrance for the event, which includes food, drink and merchandise stalls, children play activities and family friendly competitions are £10 per adult, £5 for U15s and free for Under 5s, with discounts for members of the Armed Forces.
