Williams set for 50th Warriors appearance

Powerhouse Mike Williams will make his 50th appearance for Warriors in tomorrow’s Greene King IPA Championship Final first leg with Bristol Rugby at Ashton Gate.

The Zimbabwean, who moved to Sixways in the summer of 2013, has been an ever-present over the course of the past two seasons playing in both the second-row and back-row.

And he admits he is very proud to have played so many times for the Club.

He said: “I’ve really enjoyed my time at Sixways and it’s an honour to have played for this Club so many times.

“It’s something that’s just crept up on me and it’s been a great two seasons but now I want to finish in style.”

The lock-cum-flanker moves to Leicester Tigers in the summer but insists he has a big job to do first and wants to go out on a high – by putting Warriors back in the promised land of the Aviva Premiership.

He explained: “This Club is moving in the right direction and hopefully that will take a big stride with us getting back to the top flight.

“We’re focused on the big task at hand and for me, although it’s great to make 50 appearances, I just want my last two games to be a success and for us to get promotion.

“It would be the perfect ending.”

The last time Williams played at Ashton Gate, he was on the scoresheet with his first try for the Club after bulldozing his way to the line.

But Warriors were edged 23-19 with a late twist in the game and Williams is hoping they can be on the right end of the scoreline this Wednesday night.

He added: “It was a great moment getting the ball down over the tryline. It doesn’t happen that often but it’s always nice to score in big games.

“It doesn’t matter who gets the tries tomorrow though – as long we win that’s all that counts.

“We're all in it together and want to get an advantage ahead of the second leg back at home.”
