REPORT – Oxford University 17-36 Worcester Cavaliers

Worcester Cavaliers got their 2015/16 campaign off to a flying start by putting six tries past Oxford University to win at Iffley Road.

Max Stelling, Ben Howard, Josh Adams and Alex Nisbet all crossed the whitewash in the first half to make it 26-3 at the break.

Howard bagged his second try not long after the restart but the students fought back with two catch-and-drive tries before a late Ben Fowles score put the game to bed.

Cavaliers named a strong backline for the contest and raced into the lead in the first minute with Stelling making a break and finding the line with Jamie Shillcock converting.

George Cullen soon responded for Oxford with a penalty before Welshman Adams slid over for his second try in two games, after bagging his first for Warriors against Saracens.

Shillcock, at fly-half for the night, added another two points with the boot to make it 14-3 after just seven minutes.

And just five minutes later Cavaliers had their third when full-back Howard touched down despite some resilient Oxford defending. Shillcock made no mistake with the kick to make it three out of three.

The Cavs ran riot as Bromsgrove School’s Alex Nisbet crossed the whitewash for Worcester’s fourth try on 21 minutes to open up a 26-3 lead.

No further scores were added before the break but Howard went over for his second shortly after the interval, demonstrating his raw pace to race to the line.  Shillcock’s conversion however bounced back off the upright.

Fergus Taylor pulled a try back for Oxford, touching down at the back of a maul and Cullen added the extras as the students looked to claw their way back into the match.

And they did just that when Fowles was yellow-carded, paving the way for Richie Halpin to score a debut try in the corner and Cullen converted superbly from near the touchline.

Cavaliers killed the game off with five minutes to go after Fowles collected a chip-and-chase to wrap up proceedings.

Academy Manager Mark Hewitt said: “We dominated the first-half with some clinical finishing and we looked really sharp.

“Our ability to move the ball around was fantastic and we played with great width.

“All credit to Oxford who fought their way back into the contest in the second period and put us under pressure.”
