Ryan – We need to be more clinical

Director of Rugby Dean Ryan admitted his Warriors needed to be more clinical as they were beaten 31-17 by Aviva Premiership title-chasers Leicester Tigers at Welford Road.

Warriors ran-in two first-half tries with Bryce Heem and Andy Symons touching down but conceded three in the first period to leave them 21-17 down at the break.

Leicester pushed on to seal the game late in the second-half leaving Warriors to rue some missed opportunities.

And Ryan said: “Playing without something hanging on the game is something we’ve had to come to terms with and we got it wrong in the last couple of weeks but we didn’t today.

“We turned up properly against a really good Leicester side and we’re a bit frustrated we didn’t take more that was on offer.

“We created six or seven good chances but we’ve just got to be a bit more clinical and nail them down.”

Despite the result, the Warriors boss admitted he was proud of his side who came up against a Leicester outfit that have lost just once at home all season.

He explained: “We were in that contest all the way through and we looked sharp and very physical.

“I’m really proud of the side. We conducted ourselves in the way we should have.

“There was enough there for us to do some damage today we just didn’t nail enough of it.

“You can’t come to Welford Road and miss opportunities so we’re just a bit frustrated it ended the way it did.”

Francois Hougaard played his last game of the season before heading off to join-up with the South Africa Sevens team ahead of the Rio Olympics this summer.

And Ryan paid tribute to the influence of his new scrum-half.

He added: “I thought he was great again today. You could see his quality especially when Leicester forced a period of pressure which was well-marshalled by him.

“He’s been fantastic all the way through and we’re delighted he’ll be with us next season.”
