Kirwan excited by new arrivals

Warriors flanker Carl Kirwan admits he’s looking forward to meeting his new teammates ahead of the 2016/17 campaign.

Director of Rugby Dean Ryan has bolstered his squad with several new signings including England centre Ben Te’o, Kiwi centre Jackson Willison, lock Will Spencer and hooker Matt Williams.

And Kirwan believes they will all be fantastic additions to the squad.

He said: “From what we’ve seen of Te’o he’s an exciting player who can definitely add something to the side.

“As for Will Spencer, I’ve played alongside him at London Welsh so I know how good a player he is.

“All of them will be able to add a lot to the environment and drive the squad forward.”

Kirwan joined from London Welsh last summer and despite competition for places in his first season at Sixways, the forward worked his way into Dean Ryan’s plans, becoming a key performer towards the end of the campaign.

And with another exciting season just around the corner, the 25-year-old is relishing the chance to play on the new-look Artificial Grass Pitch at Sixways which is to be installed this summer.

He continued: “The surface will mean a quicker game and will be more exciting to watch. It’ll certainly benefit the likes of Cooper Vuna and Bryce Heem who will have a field day on it.

“I don’t think it’ll change things too much though. We’ll be looking to hit the ground running when we get the new campaign underway and we’re looking forward to it.”

Following an intense 2015/16 campaign, Kirwan insists he won’t be treating himself too much over the summer as the players prepare for another busy pre-season.

He added: “There’s been a short off-season this time round so you don’t want to get too fat and unfit!

“I’m off to Thailand for a little break but there comes a point when you do a bit of panic training. There won’t be too much going on as before you know it we’ll be back in for pre-season.”
