European Challenge Cup teams – Fun Facts

So Warriors now know which teams they will come up against in Pool 3 of the 2016/17 European Challenge Cup.

The competition, which gets underway in mid-October, pits Carl Hogg’s men against Newport Gwent Dragons, Brive and Enisei-STM.

And here’s all the facts you need to know about Warriors’ opponents.

Newport Gwent Dragons

The club play their home games at the 8,500 capacity Rodney Parade which is also home to Newport County Football Club.

With just four wins out of 22 games last season, Newport finished tenth in the PRO 12 ahead of Zebre and Treviso.

Newport is 70 miles from Sixways and 25 north of Cardiff.

The city is on the doorstep of two areas of outstanding beauty with the Wye Valley and Brecon Beacons nearby.  Newport’s most famous landmark is the Transporter Bridge.

Newport are coached by former Wales flanker Kingsley Jones. And Warriors fans will be able to see a familiar face in Ceri Jones, who moved to Rodney Parade as Forwards Coach last month.

Brive

Brive play at the 15,000 capacity Stade Amédée-Domenech and finished eighth in the Top 14 last season.

Brive’s squad contains a number of internationals including Alfie Mafi, Lucas Pointud.

Former Warriors favourite Andy Goode played for Brive between 2008 and 2010.

The town has a population of around 50,000 people and played an important part in the WWII resistance against the German occupation.  The area is known for its picturesque villages and market stalls.

Warriors last played Brive in the European Challenge Cup quarter-finals in 2009, winning 29-18.

Enisei-STM

Enisei-STM were founded in 1975 and play at Central Stadium in Krasnoyarsk, the 14th largest city in Russia. The stadium has a capacity of 25,000 and they regularly attract gates of around 4,000.

Enisei made their European Challenge Cup debut last year and registered wins against Brive and Newcastle Falcons.

Enesei qualified again this year through the preliminary competition, where they beat Italian side Rovigo over two legs.

Due to their location in Siberia, temperatures can drop to as low as -40c with a winter average of around -10c. Because of the freezing conditions, Enisei often move home games to Sochi, which is over 3000 miles away.

Located along the Trans-Siberian railway the city of Krasnoyarsk is often used as a stopping point for travellers and commuters and is popular for river trips and a starting point for visits to Stolby Nature Reserve.
