Johnston – International influence will help Club move forward

Nick Johnston believes the influence of Warriors’ international players will help the Club continue their progression in the Aviva Premiership.

Francois Hougaard has been included in South Africa’s Rugby Championship squad, while Ben Te’o (pictured) is part of England’s Elite Player Squad ahead of the autumn internationals.

And, according to Warriors’ High Performance Director, the international recognition can only be a good thing for the Club.

He said: “We always want to encourage our players to play international rugby. It’s good for us and it’s good for them.

“When international players are at the Club, standards go up and the environment improves. It also has a positive impact on other players’ aspirations and desire to get better.

“It’s great to have Ben here. He arrived before he was scheduled to and made a point of coming to meet the rest of the squad on his week off, which shows how good his attitude is.

“He has now joined up with the rest of the squad in Tignes and he’ll be playing as soon as he's ready.”

Academy youngsters Huw Taylor, Andrew Kitchener and Jack Singleton were all a key part of the England Under 20 side which won the World Rugby Under 20 Championship this summer.

And Johnston is proud that Warriors are now developing players of an international standard.

He added: “We had 17 Academy players called up to the various England age groups from Under 16s to 20s last season.

“Any of our players could be an international in the future so we programme them to carry out the behaviours expected of an international player.

“We’ve got many more players coming through – and we expect some of those to play internationally.

“When they do pull on the shirt of their country, it’s great for the Club, the fans and the whole community.
