Warriors AASE edged by Saracens

Warriors AASE side Worcester Sixth Form College were beaten for the first time this season on Wednesday as Saracens’ Oaklands College battled to a 20-12 win in the AASE League North Division at Nunnery Wood Sports Complex.

The sides went in level at 5-5 at the break with Worcester’s score coming from prop Will Sutton’s 30-metre break before he set up fellow prop Tom Furnival in the corner.

Oaklands pulled away in the second-half after a quick-tap penalty caught Worcester off guard for a try under the posts and then a clever kick to the corner saw the Saracens side get another to make it 17-5.

Worcester responded with a series of strong carries, putting Oaklands under pressure before a strong driving maul was pulled down illegally by the Oaklands pack and the referee awarded a penalty try under the posts, with Lewis Dorey Converting.

However, Oaklands had the last word with a penalty to make it 20-12.

Worcester are next up away at Moulton College (Northampton Saints AASE) on Wednesday 5 October (kick-off 2pm).

Warriors AASE Manager Ryan Watkins said: “We gave it absolutely everything and I can’t fault the boys’ efforts.

“But we made a couple of errors that cost us and we missed out on a couple of attacking opportunities where I would expect us to be more clinical next time.

“As it is in big games, it’s often small decisions that can make a big difference so it’s a big lesson for the lads.”

The last home league game takes place on Wednesday 12 October against Newcastle Falcons’ Gosforth Academy at Sixways (kick-off 3pm).
