REPORT | Worcester Cavaliers 18-39 Newcastle Falcons

Worcester Cavaliers lost out to a strong Newcastle Falcons side as their search for a first Aviva A League victory continued.

The visitors were impressive throughout but Cavaliers showed flashes of brilliance themselves during an end to end affair.

Newcastle opened the scoring after 11 minutes through England Sevens Olympics hero Marcus Watson before Andy Short levelled four minutes later.

But the visitors raced away from their opponents before the break as Joshua Chisanga and Fred Burdon touched down to give their side a 12-point advantage at the break.

Burdon went over for his second six minutes after the restart before Freddie Davison finished from close range for Cavaliers.

A converted Sam Lockwood try put Newcastle 34-13 to the good as Cavaliers struggled to stay in the game.

Alex Hearle was rewarded for his fine performance with a late touch down for the hosts but the visitors cemented the victory through Dan Marshall’s effort at the death.

Newcastle were looking to avenge their first-team’s defeat at Sixways one day earlier and started brightly as Craig Willis struck an early penalty to put the visitors ahead.

Tiff Eden levelled the scores five minutes later with his first kick of the night but it was Newcastle who claimed the opening try as Tom Ffitch teed-up Watson, who dotted down in the corner.

The score brought the game to life and Cavaliers soon had a try of their own when Max Stelling broke through the centre before offloading to Will Butler, who set-up Short to dive over.

And the floodgates then opened as Newcastle built another attack before finding a way through for their second try of the night.

Cavaliers, who had the experience of Sam Betty within their ranks, looked to find a way to control the game after a tough start.

But Newcastle were very much in the ascendancy and scored a third when captain Burdon ran in after good work from the left.

Cavaliers searched for a way back into the game before the break but Newcastle held firm as the visitors went in 20-8 ahead.

The young Cavaliers side looked to regroup at the interval but were dealt a blow in the early stages of the second period as Burdon went over for his second.

The visitors were starting to look more and more dominant but Davison kept Cavaliers in the game as he bundled his way over from close range.

But any comeback hopes were all but ended as Lockwood touched down for Newcastle’s fifth try before Willis converted to put Newcastle 34-13 ahead with 25 minutes remaining.

Cavaliers continued to battle and went over for their third try late on as Hearle touched down after making the most of space down the left.

But the visitors had the last say as Marshall grounded at the death.
