Hogg – We must do the simple things well

Warriors Head Coach Carl Hogg insists his side must do the simple things well after reflecting on Saturday’s 34-13 defeat to Leicester Tigers.

Warriors found themselves 20-0 down at the break leaving themselves too much work to do in the second period and the boss knows they must start matches better.

He said: “We wanted to come up here and express ourselves. We came up with an ambition to play and we didn’t want to sit in an arm-wrestle and set-piece game.

“But we didn’t manage to get any high field position in the first-half, we didn’t exit as well as we’d have liked to and fed a very dangerous Leicester back three who profited from it.”

Warriors did fight back after the break with Jaba Bregvadze crossing the whitewash and Ryan Lamb landing eight points from the tee.

But Tigers completed the win late on to deny any hopes of a losing bonus point for Worcester.

Hogg admitted: “In the second-half we were more robust. We talked about trying to get field position and playing multi-phase rugby but ultimately at 20-0 it gives you a mountain to climb.

“We weren’t as accurate and clinical as we could be whereas Leicester looked sharp when they had the ball.

“Credit to them as they got opportunities to camp on our line and got their tries. They’re very good at squeezing sides.

“But I’m pleased with the character we showed, especially when we were staring down the barrel.

“Sometimes you need to do the simple things well at a foundation level and that’s what we need to get better at.”

Hogg also paid tribute to Ben Te’o and Dean Hammond who impressed after returning from respective injuries.

He continued: “It was great to see Dean back. He’s very physical, has a good step and looked sharp today.

“And you can see how much of an athlete Ben is. He’s always breaking the gain-line and carrying one or two defenders with him. It’s great to have them both back.”

The former Scotland international also reflected on Warriors’ opening block of Premiership games as they now prepare for two weeks of European Challenge Cup rugby.

He added: “Over the first six games we’ve shown we can be dangerous with ball in hand and we’ve showed resilience.

“Against Saracens and Newcastle we showed great determination and spirit to defend for huge periods of time.

“All the components are there and now it’s about knitting that together over an 80-minute window.

“A six-week block is always tough. We’d like to convert those draws at home into wins but we now get a chance to recharge.”
