Short excited by first trip to Russia

Andy Short admits he is looking forward to visiting Russia for the first time this weekend.

Warriors fly to Moscow to face Enisei-STM in the opening round of this season’s European Challenge Cup.

And, according to Short, his side will be fired up in unfamiliar surroundings.

He said: “We’ve all been looking forward to flying out to Moscow. I’ve never been to Russia before and the players are excited about stepping into new territory.

“We face a tough test as Enisei beat Newcastle and Brive last season. So we know they have huge pedigree on home soil.”

Warriors are likely to name a young squad for the game as they look to give players opportunities to impress in the competition.

And Short admits he and his teammates will be doing all they can to make a name for themselves.

He continued: “We’ve got a lot of competition for places within this team and Saturday will provide an opportunity for the boys who haven’t been playing this season.

“We all want to showcase what we can do. Competition is always good because it helps players stay motivated and work harder to become better.”

With the match sanctioned to take place in Moscow, Enisei are also facing a long flight from their Siberian base.

And Short believes that will give his side another advantage.

He added: “It’s almost an away game for both sides as it is unheard of for teams to travel so far for a home match.

“That will help us but we’ll just be focusing on our own game out there. We’re looking forward to the challenge and want to kick-off our European campaign with a good performance and positive result.”

Meanwhile, there’s no need to miss out on the rugby action this weekend as Worcester Valkyries will be in action at Sixways on Sunday.

The match kicks-off at 2pm on the main stadium pitch ad Valkyries will be looking to claim a third win of the season.
