Gale – The Anglo-Welsh Cup is essential for Academy players

Academy Manager Chim Gale believes the Anglo-Welsh Cup is essential to allow Academy players to develop.

Warriors named a young squad for Friday’s victory over Bristol Rugby and will hand opportunities to more youngsters in Sunday’s clash with Wasps.

And, according to Gale, young players need first-team experience if they are to put their hand up for Aviva Premiership selection.

He said: “The Anglo-Welsh Cup is hugely important for the youngsters who are playing A League rugby.

“It’s important they play in a first-team competition in the Warriors shirt alongside seasoned professionals and experience the pressure that’s needed for them to kick on and become professional players.”

Warriors’ Academy set-up has gone from strength-to-strength in recent seasons with the introduction of the Club’s Junior Academy Centres and Development Player Pathways (DPP) across the West Midlands.

And Gale believes players at the younger end of the set-up will always be a big focus for the Club.

He continued: “Unless you get a strong DPP set-up you aren’t going to get the guys coming into the first-team.

“Ultimately we all want players to progress to the top level and you need to get the building blocks in place to achieve that, which is something we’ve done over the last few years.”

Six youngsters were recently called-up to the England Under 20 Elite Player Squad, while the likes of Jamie Shillcock, Perry Humphreys and Josh Adams have all impressed in the Aviva Premiership this season.

And Gale believes the Club will start to see more and more youngsters coming through in the next few years.

He added: “We’re finally seeing the fruits of our efforts and we are starting to see more young players coming through from the various age groups.

“Young players have everything they need to succeed here and they are now being given the opportunity to play, which is fantastic.

“It’s not just one or two players either. There’s a cohort here now who believe they can achieve something at the Club.”
