Warriors to support Dementia Action Alliance

Worcester Warriors will continue their good work in the community by supporting Dementia Action Alliance, as they get set to host dementia-friendly fixtures in 2017.

Warriors, the Citizens Advice Bureau, University of Worcester and the City Council were amongst those at the first local meeting of the Dementia Action Alliance in December, who agreed to take action and make the city a friendlier place for people living with dementia.

And Warriors have pledged to hold some dementia-friendly fixtures later this year.

Warriors BME & Disability Lead Simon Northcott said: “These fixtures will be designed to give people living with dementia, as well as their carers and family, the support they need to enjoy games in a relaxed and non-threatening environment.”

There will be a dementia bus present outside Sixways Stadium on some matchdays, providing advice and support to people living with dementia and their families.

The Club is also looking to identify people who are experiencing the onset of dementia at a younger age, who would be interested in participating in Mixed Ability rugby games. For more information email simon.northcott@warriors.co.uk.

The City Council have recently interviewed a number of people who are either living with dementia, or care for someone living with the condition.

Cllr Lynn Denham, Chair of the Worcester Dementia Action Alliance, said: “The people we interviewed wanted to see better transport facilities for people living with dementia in Worcester, and also more seats in public areas in and around the city.

“They were also keen to see more entertainment on offer in a dementia-friendly environment at local theatres and cinemas. The number of people living with dementia in Worcester is steadily increasing, so we need to take action now to adapt to their needs.”

Approximately 1,131 people in Worcester and 8,636 people across the county have been diagnosed as having dementia. These figures are expected to increase to 1,725 and 14,475 respectively by 2030.
