Lewis – We have to show our character

Warriors flanker Sam Lewis insists his side must show their character when they travel down the M5 to take on local rivals Gloucester Rugby at Kingsholm this Saturday (kick-off 3pm).

Warriors sit just two points above Bristol Rugby at the foot of the table and five points behind Sale Sharks – and a win this weekend over their rivals would help propel them away from the drop zone.

And Welshman Lewis believes his side are more than capable of beating any side in the league.

He said: “The boys are really looking forward to going down to Gloucester and playing at Kingsholm. It’s only down the road and the crowd down there will be on our backs so we need to show how much character we have.

“We’re targeting every game and can beat anyone in the league on our day so hopefully we’ll go down there, put in a good performance and get the win.”

Warriors defeated an international-studded Harlequins 24-17 at Sixways on New Year’s Day and Lewis said it was exactly the response that was needed after a disappointing loss at Bristol on Boxing Day.

He continued: “A lot of the boys fronted up and we got the message from Hoggy (Head Coach Carl Hogg) and really put in a performance.

“We had the lead going into half-time and it was disappointing to let them back into it at the end but it was a pretty comfortable victory. The win was just what we needed.”

Lewis spent a lengthy spell on the sidelines over the past 18 months and admitted his delight at being back amongst the thick of things.

He explained: “It’s been a while but I’m delighted to be back out there on the pitch with the boys and I’m really enjoying myself. Hopefully I can stay injury free and kick on.

“It’s tough being injured for so long. You want to be out there but the main thing is to keep supporting the boys as we’re all in this together.

“We’ve had some bad luck with injuries this year but a lot of young guys like Josh Adams and Perry Humphreys have earned their chance and played brilliantly.

“This league is pretty tough and it will be nice to have a break after this week but we want to really kick on and get the win against Gloucester.”
