Sixways to host King’s vs RGS football match

King’s School and Royal Grammar School will go head-to-head at Sixways in their annual Challenge Cup football match on Wednesday 1 March (kick-off 7pm).

The two schools, who already play their annual rugby match at Sixways, have previously played their last three matches at Evesham United Football Club.

In the last four encounters between the teams, the match has been won by a single goal, with RGS winning the annual fixture in 2013, 2014 and 2015.

King’s School won last season’s match 1-0, in what was the first time they had won the annual fixture since 2012, where they thumped RGS 4-0 at Worcester City’s former ground St George’s Lane.

King’s School captain Cameron Mathewson said: “It will be an honour for myself and my teammates to represent King’s at Sixways.

“The opportunity to play in a big stadium is something that doesn't happen every day. I hope that everyone individually enjoys the occasion and that we as a team play to our full potential.”

RGS captain Tom Beardmore added: “RGS vs King’s is always a great occasion and the fact that Warriors have offered to host the match this year will make it extra special.

“Having been on both the winning and losing side of this rivalry in the past two seasons, the team and I are more determined than ever to make sure RGS are victorious.

“This will be the first time the football match has taken place at Sixways and victory here would undoubtedly be the highlight of our season.”
