Gold – Every bit of confidence will help

Warriors Director of Rugby Gary Gold insists his side will have gained confidence after a 53-38 triumph over Cardiff Blues in the Anglo-Welsh Cup on Saturday.

The win was Warriors’ first on the road this season and Gold was delighted his first match in charge ended in victory.

He said: “When you’re in a situation like we’re in, to go away from home and get 50 points against a team of Cardiff’s stature is great.

“I’m really happy for the guys and every little bit of confidence will help.

“A win is always good. It wasn’t the neatest performance but if you’d have given me 50 points away from home when I was on the plane last week, I’d have taken it.”

Warriors raced in four tries within the first 30 minutes to secure a bonus point and Gold was pleased with how his side started.

He stated: “It was good to start off the way we did. For the first 17 minutes they barely even got into our half but then an error let them in for an intercept try.

“We could have been neater and cleaner than that and have put down even more of a marker than we did.

“We had a plan and stuck to it and executed it properly and we were able to exert quite a lot of pressure on Cardiff and that pressure turned into tries.”

Warriors produced eight tries in total but still conceded five to the Welsh outfit, leaving Gold and his team with “plenty of work” to do.

He explained: “There were a lot of good things but there is still plenty for us to work on.

“The manner of some of those tries conceded were quite soft. Two of them came after long passages of good defending so there’s a defensive resilience we lack at the moment.

“We are good for a few phases then make errors and slip off tackles and we can’t do that against Saracens next weekend.”

Warriors host the reigning Aviva Premiership and European champions at Sixways next Saturday and Gold knows his side must sharpen up defensively for the contest.

He continued: “Saracens won’t give you an opportunity to score 50 points so we must sharpen up our defence. We have a lot of work to do but at least we can get to work off the back of a win.

“They are the best team in Europe. They are the Premiership and European champions and are on song to repeat that again. The challenges don’t get any easier and that’s why the Premiership is as tough as it is.

“The guys will have no doubt about the magnitude of the task but we are at home and I’d really like to appeal to the Warriors fans to come out in their droves to watch a team that are improving.

“If we get a full Sixways and the guys understand how much they have to tighten up, we can get a good performance.”
