Betty to step into ring for charity ‘fight night’

Warriors centurion Sam Betty may have finished playing rugby at Sixways, but this Friday night, he steps into the boxing ring in aid of a former teammate’s charity.

Worcestershire sports charity CG5, co-founded by former Warrior Craig Gillies, will hold a unique ‘fight night’ at Sixways Stadium as it looks to provide more financial support to the county’s young sporting talent.

The Sixways event will see CG5 showcasing seven boxing bouts alongside two Muay Thai fights and one K1 match-up.

Highlights on the fight card include two debutants to boxing, as Betty steps into the ring for the first time, as well as John Clark, twice winner of Britain’s Natural Strongest Man title.

Betty, who joined Warriors in 2011 and went on to make 120 appearances for the Club, said: “I’m very excited to be stepping into the ring. It’s something I’ve always thought about and I'm glad to be doing it for such a great cause.”

Dan Richards, a trustee of CG5 said: “Our fight night promises to be another great event with lots of local talent on show.

“More than anything, we hope people come along to support CG5 and those people who we are backing to win. We are now approaching our second anniversary with almost £16,000 awarded in sporting grants to young people here in Worcestershire and the West Midlands.

“During that time we’ve managed to make a difference and help people realise their sporting dreams. Nights like this are vital in our fundraising efforts.”

Readers interested in attending the event can visit the CG5 website through www.cg5.org.uk. A standard table of ten is available for £300 with a VIP table priced at £450. Single tickets are also on sale for £25.

CG5 is managed by a group of six trustees and has awarded an array of sporting grants to teams and teenagers since being established in 2015.

The CG5 name takes its inspiration from the number five shirt which CG5 trustee and co-founder Craig Gillies wore during his 11 years at Sixways.
