Van Velze – We must compete for 80 minutes

GJ van Velze admits his side must compete for the full 80 minutes if they are to pick up their first win of the season against Gloucester Rugby on Friday.

Warriors travel to Kingsholm looking for their first points of the campaign. And the vice-captain says his side can continue to improve.

He said: “This is a group of players who can get better. We have shown we can compete with teams for a certain period of the game. That just needs to become 80 minutes.

“We’ve defended for long spells this season and have made a lot of tackles. But we’re defending for longer than we should be so it comes down to game management and making sure we’re sticking to our gameplan.”

After opening night defeat to Newcastle Falcons, Warriors made improvements against Wasps and Exeter Chiefs.

But Van Velze admits there is a lot further to go if his side are to be competitive against the best teams in the league.

He continued: “There was positive stuff against Exeter but there were more negatives than positives and that’s why the results haven’t gone our way recently.

“The error count hasn’t helped us and we need to get rid of the mistakes. It’s early days and these are all things we can control.

“This team is unbelievably well conditioned and the players, staff and supporters need to have the belief that we can be successful and move forward.

“It’s about aspiring to get better every week and seeing where it can take us. We have a great squad and players are treated well so we need to go and show that on matchdays and the results will look after themselves.”
