Warriors players sign new contracts

Warriors have been handed another boost this week with the news that GJ van Velze, Duncan Weir and Will Butler have all signed new contracts.

Captain Van Velze moved to Sixways in 2014 and has been instrumental for the side once again this season.

The South African has skippered the side during all but one season since his arrival and racked up his 75th Warriors appearance against Bath Rugby last month.

Van Velze said: “I believe this season’s squad is the strongest one we have ever had and the team have shown tremendous progression on the pitch through the sacrifices we have made as individuals.

“I am also extremely grateful to the support staff who helped me during my year out with injury so I am delighted to have signed a new contract.

“The new owners have come in and have injected real passion and energy in the last couple of months and I am really excited about the seasons ahead and working hard alongside the players and coaches to help us reach our potential as a squad.”

Scotland international Weir has been a revelation on the pitch since joining Warriors in the summer and has been key to the Club’s strong early-season form.

The fly-half has made 11 appearances in all competitions for Warriors and has racked up 119 points.

He has been consistent with the boot and has a kicking accuracy of almost 91 per cent in the Gallagher Premiership courtesy of 30 successful kicks from 33 attempts.

His last 19 kicks in the Premiership have all sailed through the posts and he is the second top scorer in the league with 87 points.

Weir said: “All the lads welcomed me with open arms when I arrived in the summer and I’ve felt at home from day one.

“These lads are all pulling in the same direction and working hard for each other, and that shows with the way we’ve been playing.

“My aim now is to help us get some more wins and keep pushing up the Premiership table.”

Butler has represented England from Under 17s to Under 20s levels, helping the Under 20s win the Six Nations in 2017 and reach the World Rugby Under 20s Championship final later that year.

He made his first-team debut against Enisei-STM in October 2016 and scored two tries against Northampton Saints last season in only his second Premiership appearance.

Butler said: “Solly and the coaches have been clear about where they are taking the Club and the players have all bought in to what they are working to achieve.

“I am extremely grateful for the opportunities I have had at Warriors and I am excited about the journey ahead.”
