Te’o to start for England against South Africa

Warriors centre Ben Te’o will win his 14th England cap when he starts against South Africa in the opening Quilter International at Twickenham on Saturday (kick-off 3pm).

It will be Teo’s first appearance for England since the last match of the Six Nations against Ireland in March. The British and Irish Lions international missed England’s summer tour to South Africa because of a thigh injury and the start of Warriors’ Gallagher Premiership campaign with a hamstring injury.

Te’o returned to action as a replacement in Warriors’ European Challenge Cup victory over Ospreys two weeks ago before he linked up with England at training camp in Portugal last week.

Te’o was one of three Warriors players involved in the training camp alongside Nick Schonert and Ted Hill, who will be available for club duty in Saturday’s Premiership Rugby Cup match against Leicester Tigers at Welford Road.

Henry Slade of Exeter Chiefs will partner Te’o in the centre against South Africa with Manu Tuilagi of Leicester Tigers named as cover on the bench for a possible first appearance since the 2016 Six Nations.

Dylan Hartley (Northampton Saints) and Owen Farrell (Saracens) are named as co-captains in a starting XV which includes 413 caps.

Alec Hepburn (Exeter Chiefs) will make his starting debut for England while uncapped players Zach Mercer (Bath Rugby) and Ben Moon (Exeter Chiefs) are in line to win their first caps off the bench.

England Head Coach Eddie Jones said: “We’ve become very well organised in our set piece and have done a lot of good work in Portugal over the last week. We have put in a new defence system and our attack looks more organised than it was on the South Africa tour.

“Against South Africa you have got the physical battle up front and then you have to be tactically smart in how you attack against them. We need to find ways to gain momentum, then once we find momentum, convert that to points.

“We are really excited to be back at Twickenham Stadium. It’s been a long time and we can’t wait to play in front of 82,000 fans.”
