Warriors Women impress in Welsh Regional Championship

Warriors Women players were on the winning sides in the opening round of the Welsh Rugby Regional Women’s Championship.

Three Warriors players featured for Scarlets in their 18-5 win over Cardiff Blues, including flanker Alex Callender who captained the side and scored the Scarlets’ second try of the match.

She was joined in red by fellow Warrior Sioned Harries, who started at number eight and new signing Caitlin Lewis who was selected on the wing.

The thrio shared the pitch with Warriors’ team-mate Hannah Bluck who lined up at inside centre for the defeated Blues.

Following his side’s victory, Scarlets regional lead Daryl Morgan sung the praises of the Warriors Women who featured.

“We have a very young squad with the majority having come through our development programme over the last few years, coupled with the international experience of the likes of Sioned Harries, captain Alex Callender and Lleucu George,” Morgan said.

“Not only did they make a big difference on the field but they gave the young players the confidence to go out and perform.”

In the other Round One match, Warriors Angharad de Smet and Gwen Crabb helped reigning champions Ospreys to a commanding 49-0 win over RGC.

Incoming second-row Crabb made the pivotal turnover to set-up her side’s sixth try of the match before de Smet broke clear in midfield to touch down under the posts for Ospreys’ eighth.

The two could face some of their Warriors team-mates in Round Two when Ospreys travel to Scarlets on Friday evening (kick-off 7.00pm), while Bluck takes on RGC with Blues on Sunday (kick-off 2.30pm).
