Six Warriors Women named in Wales squad

Six Warriors Women have been named in Wales Women’s squad for the November international series.

Ffion Lewis, Alex Callender, Gwen Crabb and Sioned Harries, alongside the uncapped duo of Caitlin Lewis and Angharad de Smet have all been selected by head coach Rowland Phillips.

Phillips’ side will face Spain on Sunday 3 November, Ireland on Sunday 10 November and Scotland on Sunday 17 November away from home before returning to Wales for games against Crawshay’s at Eugene Cross Park on Saturday 23 November and the Barbarians in a double-header at the Principality Stadium on Saturday 30 November.

Scrum-half Ffion Lewis has impressed for Warriors in the first two games of the season, scoring a try against Wasps FC Ladies on the opening day.

Crabb has also struck up a partnership with Lyndsay O’Donnell in the second-row while Callender has put in two strong showings at the back of the scrum.

Wing Caitlin Lewis has also made positive performances out wide in Warriors first two Premier 15s games, in her first season with the club.

Wales boss Phillips singled out Callender and Crabb as players the uncapped members of his squad should look up to.

“The likes of Lauren Smyth, Manon Johnes, Alex Callender and Gwen Crabb all earned their first caps last autumn and have gone on to become key players in the squad,” Phillips said.

“The opportunity is there for others to do the same if they apply themselves. We are clear on where we need to develop to become consistently competitive.

“There’s a better understanding now from players of what is required of an international player in terms of fitness, skill levels, attitude and everything else that goes with being an international rugby player.”
